Dr. Samuel Hailu earned his Doctor of Medicine and orthopedic specialty certificate from Addis Ababa University School of Medicine. He completed traveling fellowships at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, and Rush Presbyterian in Chicago. He then completed his subspecialty fellowships in orthopedic trauma and joint replacement at the Sunnybrook Health Sciences and Holland Orthopedic & Arthritic Centers in University of Toronto, Canada.
After his return to Ethiopia, he pioneered advanced operative management of complex pelvic and acetabular fractures. Dr. Samuel received the merit award from the Ethiopian Society of Orthopedics & Traumatology Society (ESOT) for his contribution to the development of advanced pelvic and acetabular surgery in Ethiopia. He teaches pelvic and acetabular surgical techniques both in the region as well as internationally, from Kenya to the United States. He has served as an instructor at SIGN International Conferences in Richland, Washington, USA.
His other special subspecialty interest is total hip and knee replacement. He is pioneering a muscle sparing surgical technique for hip replacement surgery, known as the direct anterior approach, in the region. After further study in Belgium, he has introduced the efficient direct anterior hip replacement concept in Ethiopia. This technology has many advantages including very low risk of complications, a smaller scar, efficient surgical technique, and a shorter rehabilitation process. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Orthopedic Surgery and the Orthopedic Trauma Fellowship Director at Black Lion Specialized Hospital Specialized Hospital, Addis Ababa University School of Medicine. He also operates on a part-time basis at AaBET (Addis Ababa Burn, Emergency and Trauma) Hospital in St. Paul Hospital Millennium Medical College. He is now a part-time orthopedic, trauma and joint replacement surgeon at Samaritan Surgical Center.
