Dr. Samuel Hailu

Dr. Samuel Hailu earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) and orthopaedic specialty certificate from Addis Ababa University. He completed traveling fellowships at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, and Rush Presbyterian in Chicago. He then traveled to Toronto, Canada for his subspecialty fellowships training in orthopaedic trauma and joint replacement at the Sunnybrook Health Sciences and Holland Orthopaedic & Arthritic Centres, University of Toronto. After his return to Ethiopia, he pioneered advanced operative management of complex pelvic and acetabular fractures. He teaches pelvic and acetabular surgical techniques both in the region as well as internationally. His other special subspecialty interest is total hip and knee replacement. Besides the routine joint replacements he performs and teaches, he has pioneered a muscle sparing surgical technique for hip replacement surgery, known as the direct anterior approach in Ethiopia. After further study in Belgium, he has introduced the efficient direct anterior hip replacement concept to his country. This technology has many advantages including a very low risk of complications, a smaller scar, an efficient surgical technique, and a shorter rehabilitation process. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery and the Orthopaedic Trauma Fellowship Director at Tikur Anbessa (Black Lion) Specialized Hospital, Addis Ababa University.
